Mission

To generate use, knowledge and inspiration from Europe's cultural heritage information.

Objectives

  • To establish and reinforce long-term partnerships among museums and other European cultural institutions.
  • To promote a European focus for international initiatives.
  • To facilitate on-line access to the cultural heritage of Europe.

EMII aims to convert its existing network into a dynamic distributed centre of expertise dedicated to facilitate the development of cultural heritage information resources in Europe.

Strategies

EMII empowers cultural heritage organisations to open up their cultural content to a wider audience by:

  • Ensuring that best practice in cultural information management is implemented across Europe.
  • Promoting collaboration and sharing expertise among EMII partners.
  • Encouraging the use of standards developed in co-operation with the international cultural heritage community to support digitisation processes.
  • Raising awareness, disseminating information, and educating cultural heritage professionals on the latest developments in the field of new technology, in particular relating to cultural information management.
  • Working in collaboration with other existing networks and international standards organisations to ensure effective interoperability among museums, libraries and archives.

Network

The European Museums' Information Institute - EMII - is a collaborative, virtual network formed by key institutions in the European Union.

The network's main purpose is to promote the exchange of best practice and the effective use of standards in information management among European member states and associated countries.

The partnership was first established in 1999, in order to strengthen the position of the cultural heritage sector and, more specifically the work of museums within the European Union.

EMII receives financial support from its members and gains funding from grant funding bodies, such as the European Commission, to develop specific products.

The EMII Consortium:

  • Works as a well-established and successful partnership.
  • Operates within the political context of the European Union.
  • Supports the work of the museum community in Europe.
  • Promotes cross-sectoral and other international links.
  • Disseminates information management resources to cultural heritage professionals.

Currently the EMII Consortium is formed by 10 partner organisations in 10 European member states or associated countries:
