Brief description (published aims and objectives):
Mission
The Vereniging Digitaal Erfgoed Nederland (DEN, Dutch Digital Heritage Association) aims to improve digital accessibility of cultural and scientific heritage in The Netherlands. DEN wants to contribute to the knowledge society of the future by promoting an integrated, cross-sector, cross-institution approach of digitalization and accessibility issues. It will encourage the use of relevant tools and methods in this field and support the heritage institutions in professional development and in the definition, planning and management of digitalisation projects. DEN can act as mediator between the heritage institutions and the ICT industry, international networks and interest groups, such as schools, tourist organisations and professional specialists. It is of course not the intention of DEN to take the full digitalisation task of all heritage institutions upon its shoulders. The aim is to serve as a catalyst in a general drive of the heritage sector towards a more creative, professional and result driven app oach concerning this task.

Origin
Until the late nineties there has been little strategic development in The Netherlands into a digital future for institutions in charge of national cultural collections. In 1998, the Vereniging DEN was set up to survey and coordinate the initiatives in this field. The financial and moral support of the government is enabling DEN to take a prominent place in the Dutch cultural heritage community. However, the founding of DEN was not initiated by the government, but by the heritage community itself, following its deepfelt wish to determine its own future on the digital platform in a spirit of cooperation and integration. The community has seen enough incidental, fragmentary projects peter out because of their isolated character.

Advisorship
The Vereniging DEN acts as special advisor to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and to the Mondriaan Foundation in the assessment of grant requests in the area of digitalization and accessibility of cultural heritage collections.

Membership
All institutions in the Netherlands in charge of cultural heritage collections open to the public can join the Vereniging DEN. Associate membership is open to:
  • National, provincial, regional or local organisations providing support to heritage institutions
  • Overall organizations of scientific or heritage institutions
  • Other organizations or institutions accepted as such by the board
Board and Bureau
The board of the Vereniging consists of: drs. E.J.F.B. van Huis (chairman), dr. A.J. Lever (secretary), drs. R.H.C. Vos (treasurer), dr. M.W. van Boven, dr. E. van Eijck van Heslinga, dr. R.E.O. Ekkart. The Bureau (office) is manned by drs. Jos Taekema (director), drs. Janneke van Kersen and drs. Marcel Ras (consultants) and Ton Nieuwdorp (office manager).
