European Standards Survey

Introduction and Contents

.
The EMII Standards Survey is critical to the success of EMII. The information that you provide will provide the basis for the future business plan and EMII application to Culture 2000

The survey is based on the European Commission Memorandum of Understanding: Multi-media access to Europe's Cultural Heritage, (a joint initiative by the Commission's former Directorate General XIII and Directorate General X). The categories of information standards adopted in this survey are informed by the final report of Working Group 1: Standards and Protocols for Interoperability of Systems.
How to complete this questionnaire
During work in progress, i.e. up to 31 March 2000, partners can log onto the Active Partners area of the EMII Web site to complete their survey on-line. Information can be submitted as it is gathered. For example if you already have details of relevant national or state legislation in relation to museums this can be submitted immediately. Answers to the remaining questions can be submitted later by returning to this form. Similarly, you may change information previously submitted via the form.

As data is submitted it will be transferred to an on-line results page, one per country, accessible to all Active Partners. You can review your results on-line, and also access the data capture forms from the results page using the button.

EMII staff are working to strict deadlines in order to achieve the necessary steps in preparation for the forthcoming bid to Culture 2000. Your co-operation and contributions are essential in ensuring that we achieve our aims. Therefore, all surveys must be completed in full by 31 March 2000 and to the following timetable within this period:
Section 1.1 -1.3 National Overview: 31 January 2000
Section 1.4 - 1.8 National Overview 29 February 2000
Section 2 Procedural Standards, Rules and Guidelines 29 February 2000
Section 3. Information Management Standards 31 March 2000
Section 4. Future Vision 31 March 2000
It is not necessary to complete each section before moving to the next. The dates given are those that we require information by at the latest.

General points:
  • Where 'number of museums' is requested please count museums with more than one physical site, i.e. several branches or locations as one.
  • Some questions allow you to qualify your answer as 'actual', 'estimated' or 'unknown'. Please ensure that a selection is made. 'Unknown' must be qualified in the space provided with an explanatory note. Explanations for 'estimated' are optional.
  • If a text field is not applicable please indicate this by entering 'n/a'.
  • Section 2 (Procedural Standards) and Section 3 (Information Management Standards) include examples of widely used 'de facto' and 'de jure' standards. Please indicate if any of these are used and enter details of all relevant additional standards in each category that are also in use in your country.
It is vital that you provide answers to all questions. In some cases you may need to conduct your own survey to do this. The EMII European Standards Survey can be used as a template. If you have difficulty in completing any sections of the questionnaire contact Rosa Botterill, Standards Co-ordinator or Christina Brown, Standards Assistant for advice and assistance.
